A huge fan of brunch, I am always on the lookout for good local spots. It seems the secret is out about the delish cuisine at Styer's Garden Cafe so I'm on to the next one. Enter The White Dog Cafe in Wayne. The White Dog has been an institution in University City since the seventies and recently ventured out to the suburbs. I stopped in for a fantastic, well priced brunch and walked out after an amazing meal of fresh, local foods in a welcoming doggie inspired atmosphere. I highly recommend the mushroom and onion omelet, it is melt in your mouth good!

Kelly is offering her collection through trunk shows at at Costco Stores and some of the dresses will be under $1,000 (for these dresses this is quite a steal)! The designer isn't skimping on quality either, the fabrics include lush satin, Alencon lace and silk organzas. The entry from Pub & Kitchen really stopped me in my tracks, the long branches paired with bright daffodils equals perfection.

The Anthropologie catalog is a foundation in the direct mail world, essentially building a brand with an inspirational, never-disappointing catalog assortment. The Anthro catalog takes readers on a journey to an inspirational world of style, charm and whimsy. The format has been tweaked over the years and grown with the concept as one would expect from such a ever-evolving brand. I was surprised today when I received my March Anthropologie catalog and found the format has completely changed. As a catalog marketer this is a fascinating concept and a fascinating move. Anthro has taken the product descriptions, prices and item numbers off the pages the actual products are displayed on and combined them by vignette (apparel, accessories and home) on group pages at the beginning of each catalog section. Long gone are the days of customers receiving their catalog in the mail, calling customer service or mailing in a form to place their order. Websites were once an offshoot of a booming catalog business and the tables have turned for the majority of retailers. I'm guessing that Anthropologie knows (like most retailers) that the majority of customers shop the digital catalog and click to purchase items directly online but what about the traditional catalog customer, does that customer still exist? I am curious to see if this format will continue in future catalogs. The redesign is definitely more about inspiration less about selling. What do you think?

I received Farmers' Market Desserts over the holidays and just recently had a chance to dive into the delicious recipes. I love a good lemon bar, so these key lime bars were a refreshing, tasty twist on a classic. The process was surprisingly simple (I was a little concerned when I realized you make your own crust), and the end result was super yummy. They aren't the healthiest but what dessert is? Enjoy!

Key Lime Bars:
24 bars
Shortbread Crust

1 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1/3 cup confectioners' sugar, plus more for finishing
1/2 teaspoon finely grated Key lime zest
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) plus 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold, cut into 10 pieces

Filling

1 2/3 cups granulated sugar
1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
5 large eggs, at room temperature
3/4 cup fresh Key lime juice
1 teaspoon finely grated Key lime zest
1/4 cup half-and-half

1. Preheat oven to 350F, with a rack in the lower third. Line the bottom and sides of a 13- by 9-inch baking pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil, extending it about 2 inches beyond the pan all around to aid in removing the bars from the pan. 2. To make the crust, stir together the flour, 1/3 cup confectioners' sugar, lime zest, and salt in a bowl. Scatter the butter over the top. Using a pastry blender, two knives, or your fingertips, cut in the butter until the mixture has the appearance of wet, clumpy sand. It should hold together in clumps when you gently press it with your fingers. 3. Scatter the mixture evenly in the prepared pan and use your hands to pack it firmly onto the bottom. Bake until lightly golden, about 20 minutes. 4. While the crust bakes, make the filling. Stir together the sugar, flour, and salt in a bowl. Add the eggs and stir until completely smooth. Add the lime juice and zest and the half-and-half and mix slowly but thoroughly to create a smooth mixture without many air bubbles. 5. When the crust is ready, remove it from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 325F. 6. Pour the filling over the hot crust and return the pan to the oven. Bake until the filling is just set, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool completely in the pan on a wire rack, then refrigerate for 30 minutes for easiest cutting. 7. Use the extended ends of the paper to lift the large bar from the pan to a cutting board. Using a sharp, heavy knife, and wiping the blade clean with a damp kitchen towel between cuts, cut lengthwise into 4 equal strips, then cut crosswise into 6 equal strips to make 24 bars. Pack the cooled bars between layers of waxed paper in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. 8. Serve cold or at room temperature. Sift confectioners' sugar over the bars just before serving.

Just caught my first glimpse of the Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 collection and it's near perfection. So many versatile options make all the pieces in this collection very wearable. Much to my delight, I stumbled into Whipped Bakeshop in Fishtown and what a delicious discovery! Not only are the cupcakes some of the best I've had, the other sweets are amazing too (think whoopie pies). The shop is cheerfully styled with quirky decor, an amazing Warren Mueller Light Sculpture adorns the lobby. I think I found my new favorite sweet spot!
Pastry artist Zoe Lukas was inspired by posting photos of her gorgeous deserts on Flickr. Lukas was inundated with requests and orders for the gorgeous desserts, thus Whipped was born. Although Whipped didn't do much for my New Year's resolution it was well worth it!

I consider myself somewhat of a pizza connoisseur and since I don't eat meat, pizza is a staple for me. So I have to share with the masses simply one of the best pizzas I have had in the Philadelphia region. Poppi's Pizza in Wynnewood PA has done it. Poppi's specializes in thin crust pizza with quality ingredients. Everything is fresh and bonus they have vegetarian sausage. The pizza is melt in your mouth fantastic a must try for any pizza eater. Located in the Wynnewood Shopping Center in Wynnewood, PA (a short drive from the city). PS: Make sure to check out their website for some coupons too!

Recently I stopped by Styer's Garden Cafe (914 Baltimore Pike, Glen Mills PA) for brunch and it was such a wonderful meal, I had to share. I was visiting Styer's for a garden landscape consult and decided to grab a bite; what an unexpected treat! The meal made mostly with organic foods from local farms was superb and fairly well priced too. The atmosphere was fantastic with such attention to detail (delicious detail at that, fresh baked bread in a terracotta pot). I highly recommend a trip if you are in the area.

Over the years I have wavered between full on vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian to carnivore. Currently in a vegetarian stage eating vegan when I can. Fact is I love food and everyday it's difficult for me not to eat meat. That said, I love animals too and the more I read and research on factory farming, the more it strengthens my resolve to be a vegan. It's not easy, granted vegan and vegetarian foods have come a long way but for a foodie like me it's difficult to find good tasting vegan options. Enter this fantastic recipe from Life on Mars, Chicago's vegan takeoutery, you'll never know they're vegan!

The Toughest Cookie
Makes about twenty

Ingredients
2¼ c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 c. soy butter, softened
¾ c. raw sugar
¾ c. brown sugar, packed
1 tsp. vanilla
2 “eggs” (use Ener-G egg replacer)
1½ c. semisweet chocolate chips
1 c. chopped walnuts

1. Preheat the oven to 375°.

2. In one bowl, mix dry ingredients. In another, cream soy butter, sugars, vanilla, and eggs.

3. Gradually beat the dry mix into the wet. Fold in chocolate chips and nuts.

4. Drop large, even spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 9-11 minutes (or until edges are golden).

5. Eat your vegan heart out.

I just returned from an amazing trip to Seattle and the city and surrounding areas are just breathtaking. The weather was perfect for the first two days; 80 degrees, sunny and no humidity! The next couple of days were a bit more typical Seattle style, overcast, chilly and rainy but it didn't interfere with my fun. I put together a little round up for exploring the Seattle streets.

I hate flats, other than flip flops which don' t count, I absolutely despise flats. When you have the cankle situation like I do, the more you can do to lengthen the legs the better. Nonetheless, I was in a do or die situation(a lot of city walking was involved) and it was a business function, so sneakers were out and the flops had given me a blister. Then I stumbled into gap, not really looking for footwear, but alas the perfect option. The city flat for $38 is packable, they come with a cute little carrying pouch and they fold up for travel! Most of all, they feel like slippers and were wonderful for walking.

Ah, the investment jeans...yes, many of a time have I purchased a pair of excessively priced jeans, telling myself it's an investment. Sad to say all but 4 pairs of my 30+ of my jeans are tried and true investments. Several pairs just haven't lasted the test of time, my own fault really...allowing dragging hems to drag all over the streets of Philadelphia creating huge gaping holes. Alas, enter Denim Therapy the Denim Doctor. Send them your worn favorites you thought were beyond repair, and voilà they send them back to you good as new! They estimate repairs at $7 per inch (my repair was $35). See the photos of their work, this is the real deal folks...I would definitely return especially to save a pair of my irreplaceable favorites and bonus it's green too, reuse and recycle instead of buy new!!

Carova, North Carolina

Last week, I had the amazing opportunity to visit the 4x4 beaches of Carova, NC. When I say it was breathtaking, it's an understatement. Located in the Outer Banks and only accessible in a four-wheel drive vehicle (and this is no joke, I saw a mini van stuck and getting towed). Anyway, the most amazing part aside from the secluded privacy of the homes on the beach are the wild Spanish Mustangs. These horses are unique to Carova beach and have been there for over 500 years. If you are ever in the OBX, I strongly recommend checking them out. There are several different guided tour operations, we used Wild Horse Adventures and it was fantastic.
